Immigration Reform

Immigration Reform

Immigration reform is a term used to describe a change in the immigration policies of a country. At the moment this is a topic of discussion in the United States. Eight senators are currently negotiating a bipartisan immigration reform. The United States has many immigrants that wish to have a path to citizenship. Many are not able to understand how this would be helpful to both the country and the people, because of this there is a great debate about whether an immigration reform should be carried out or not. I am strong believer in giving immigrants a path to legalization.
An immigration reform would give many, the opportunity to have a better life here, in the United States. It would also be the top point in reaching the American Dream. Legalization would be like a dream come true for most immigrants that feel that the U.S. is their home after living here for so long. I really don’t see what the big problem is with legalizing immigrants. I feel that they play a huge part in what our country is today. Without immigration we wouldn’t be the melting pot we are now. No matter what many argue, immigrants do help the country; they are not here just to raise the crime rate or anything like that. Immigrants help the economy in many ways, many of them pay taxes, so how is it possible that a country does not allow them to be a legal citizen but yet makes them pay taxes not matter what? This goes to show that they are important to our country and they help it maintain its position in the world.
There are many people that come to the United States to seek opportunities but once they get here they see that they are shut out from so many of them just because they are illegally in the country. They are unable to work due to the fact that they don’t have a social security number or employment authorization. Without these things there isn’t much you can do. Working or having a career is part of succeeding in life so I feel that people should not be stopped from doing so just because they went to a country where they were hoping to have better opportunities in advancing in life.
Another issue I have with not giving immigrants a pathway to citizenship, is how there are so many children and young adults that have lived here most of their lives and feel that they are American but are unable to fully take on that title because they were brought here when they were very young. I feel that if they have or will dedicate themselves to being a person of good with a promising future they should be able to one day be legally in this country. The DREAM Act was a very promising act for many immigrant students in the U.S. but unfortunately it hasn’t been able to pass. Fortunately, President Barack Obama has made it possible for those students that have continued to go to school and actually tried making something of themselves to have an employment authorization through the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). I believe this was a big step, in the direction of achieving an immigration reform not only for young adults who are attending or graduated from high school or college but for every immigrant that represents no harm to this country.
An immigration reform will always be a subject of discussion and debate. Just like everything else in life, it has its pros and cons but I strongly believe that this has more pros than cons not only in favor of immigrants but of the country as well. Immigration reform is a must, now that we are really becoming a country of immigrants. It shouldn’t matter where we come from as long as we are all going in the same direction, which is to live in one of the greatest countries of the world with no limitations.

Personal Statement
My name is Brenda Sanchez, a Hispanic student and a junior in high school that resides in Huntington Park. Huntington Park is a dominantly Hispanic neighborhood, and I am writing this to hopefully be accepted to the Young Senators program. I want to be accepted because as I have already mentioned Huntington Park is a Hispanic neighborhood, I feel that the Young Senators program will help me discover new things and might also help me avoid any culture shock that I may face in the future especially when beginning college.
I am a person of values and I have picked these up from being raised in a good family. I am the oldest child and I have two younger brothers as well as both of my parents. I am an immigrant therefore when I see opportunities like these I try to take as much advantage of them as I can. I have always tried to aim high and work hard in order to achieve it. I know that nothing comes easy in life but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try new things or give up easily. My family and I have not had the easiest life but that has taught me to face challenges in the most positive way that I can.
I haven’t faced many challenges in school especially since learning new things comes easily to me. I haven’t had any major trouble in any school subject. I enjoy mathematics a lot and I consider it to be my favorite and also my strongest subject in school. I have always thought this except when in 7th grade I had to take Algebra. I was part of one class of 7th graders that had been offered to take this class a year earlier than usual. I knew it would be a challenge but I took it. Throughout the year it became very overwhelming but I learned to understand each concept. I also had to sacrifice many things to be able to achieve in that class. When the school year began the class was fairly simple but as time progressed it began to get more difficult for me. I had never really encountered this problem in any of my other classes so I quickly thought of just giving up. I tried my best to get help and be tutored but even that wouldn’t help much. By the end of the first semester I had a C for my Algebra grade and I knew that was passing but I felt like I had to do better. I hadn’t gotten anything below a B for final grades before. I decided to sign up for the “Jaime Escalante Math Program” and had to give up my vacation to be able to go. I learned many new things and was very satisfied with what I had done. I went onto my second semester and improved a bit but when vacations came again, I decided to go the “Jaime Escalante Math Program” once again. By the end of the school year I passed with a high C. I took the time to analyze what I done and realized that all the practice and persistence had paid off.
I try my best at everything even if it is something new for me. I’ve noticed throughout my short life that that is the best way to find things you might enjoy. I am also a very responsible and dedicated person. I try to put my all into everything I do. Another quality of mine is that I’m responsible. As of now I am part of the leadership class at my school and try to not fail at any of my responsibilities as ASB Treasurer, Class Treasurer, and Marketing Commissioner. I am a respectful person towards others and their ideas. I normally try to see everybody’s opinion from their point of view. I also love helping people with any problem they may have. If I find that I’m unable to help with my limited knowledge I try to find out ways in which I can help. I try supporting everyone and their ideas because I believe everybody should be valued that way.
I hope that if I am able to be part of the Young Senators program I will learn many things. I hope to learn about the variety of opportunities that are out there for young people like me that are hoping to be someone in life. I wish to a very successful person in the future and I truly believe that this program will help me see myself more in that sort of image. It will help me see that it is possible.
