Immigration Reform

Immigration Reform

Immigration reform is a term used to describe a change in the immigration policies of a country. At the moment this is a topic of discussion in the United States. Eight senators are currently negotiating a bipartisan immigration reform. The United States has many immigrants that wish to have a path to citizenship. Many are not able to understand how this would be helpful to both the country and the people, because of this there is a great debate about whether an immigration reform should be carried out or not. I am strong believer in giving immigrants a path to legalization.
An immigration reform would give many, the opportunity to have a better life here, in the United States. It would also be the top point in reaching the American Dream. Legalization would be like a dream come true for most immigrants that feel that the U.S. is their home after living here for so long. I really don’t see what the big problem is with legalizing immigrants. I feel that they play a huge part in what our country is today. Without immigration we wouldn’t be the melting pot we are now. No matter what many argue, immigrants do help the country; they are not here just to raise the crime rate or anything like that. Immigrants help the economy in many ways, many of them pay taxes, so how is it possible that a country does not allow them to be a legal citizen but yet makes them pay taxes not matter what? This goes to show that they are important to our country and they help it maintain its position in the world.
There are many people that come to the United States to seek opportunities but once they get here they see that they are shut out from so many of them just because they are illegally in the country. They are unable to work due to the fact that they don’t have a social security number or employment authorization. Without these things there isn’t much you can do. Working or having a career is part of succeeding in life so I feel that people should not be stopped from doing so just because they went to a country where they were hoping to have better opportunities in advancing in life.
Another issue I have with not giving immigrants a pathway to citizenship, is how there are so many children and young adults that have lived here most of their lives and feel that they are American but are unable to fully take on that title because they were brought here when they were very young. I feel that if they have or will dedicate themselves to being a person of good with a promising future they should be able to one day be legally in this country. The DREAM Act was a very promising act for many immigrant students in the U.S. but unfortunately it hasn’t been able to pass. Fortunately, President Barack Obama has made it possible for those students that have continued to go to school and actually tried making something of themselves to have an employment authorization through the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). I believe this was a big step, in the direction of achieving an immigration reform not only for young adults who are attending or graduated from high school or college but for every immigrant that represents no harm to this country.
An immigration reform will always be a subject of discussion and debate. Just like everything else in life, it has its pros and cons but I strongly believe that this has more pros than cons not only in favor of immigrants but of the country as well. Immigration reform is a must, now that we are really becoming a country of immigrants. It shouldn’t matter where we come from as long as we are all going in the same direction, which is to live in one of the greatest countries of the world with no limitations.
